HOW WE MET

AS TOLD BY SARA

As I entered the Loft Dance Club in Billings, MT, my hopes for finding the right lady were slim. Nevertheless, the dance floor was waiting to be graced by my bountiful moves. The bouncer checked my ID and took my $5 cover. I was on my way to the dance floor when I looked over and saw a fine ass lady in a black dress with red polka dots. Peculiar. I’d never seen her here before. She appeared to be yelling at the bartender, so I stopped briefly to have a listen. “You don’t have Fireball!? Well that’s dumb” she said. She went on her way. I appreciated her honesty and found this exchange hilarious.

Later, I glanced across the floor and saw that red polka dot dress again! I quickly pulled my roommate over and asked, “Who is that!?” She didn’t know either. This was a rare occurrence in good ol Billings. I knew what I had to do: Step 1: lubricate my bones with a few drinks, Step 2: impress her with my dance moves, Step 3: make her fall in love with me. My odds were slim, but the Dumb and Dumber quote rang in my head, “One out of a million…So you’re saying there’s a chance!”

I danced to entrance, and entrance I did. Jumping, bouncing, sweeping, sliding, spinning, jiving, and even dusting off the ol 'shoulders. I was later informed that I used the proper form to dust the shoulders and this was a major selling point (dust with the outside of your hand, not the inside sillies).

Try as she might, she couldn’t resist. We danced the night away until the last call hit and people started to file out the door. I saw her leaving with her friend, so ran over before she could escape. “Can I get your number?” I asked. She looked into my eyes and instead of saying yes, she gave my cheek a gentle pet with one hand and said, “You have the softest face.” Then she turned away and started walking out the door. Luckily, I was able to stop her just in time to give her my number (wink). Good enough.

After they both walked out the door, I looked down and noticed someone had dropped their credit card. I picked it up. It read Emily Bain! The princess had intentionally left her slipper for me to return to her! How cheeky. I ran into the parking lot after them, but they were already well on their way to Dennys for a late night breakfast.

Being the gentlewoman I am, I left the card with the bartender and hoped she would text me…. the rest is history.

AS TOLD BY EMILY

Well I can't confirm the veracity of Sara's account prior to meeting on the dance floor, I can confirm it was her dance moves that caught my attention. I was visiting Billings for the weekend and the Loft was the only dance "club" in town, which also happened to be the only gay bar in town (R.I.P. Loft). Sara was out on the dance floor, "brushing the dirt off her shoulder"—the correct way. My best friend and I had a long standing belief that this was the truest judge of character. Sara passed the test....but her cute face also helped. We danced a few songs together and at the end of the night, she asked for my number. I gently cupped her face and told her no. She seemed shocked (I guess no one had ever turned her down before 😂) and gave me her number instead. Yes I dropped my card but it was not intentional despite Sara asserting otherwise. I was quite drunk, which can be confirmed by the Facebook post I posted later that night—"Androgynous lady got me questioning my sexuality like whaaaaat?!" A truer statement has never been made.

After leaving the bar, my friend thought it would be fun to call her while we were drunk eating breakfast at 2am at Denny's. She told me she found my card and left it at the bar (she should have kept it—what better way to see me again!) My friend tried to get Sara to join us but she was already home. Laaaaaame. Since Sara had my number now, there was no escaping her. She texted me cheesy pick up lines for weeks and when I returned about a month later for a friend's birthday, we met up to dance again. We had our first of many, many breakfast dates and shared our first kiss in the Denny's parking lot.....at 2am 🥰

It's been a yolo kind of love since the beginning with lots of traveling, adventures, costumes and cats (my greatest accomplishment). We had so many opportunities to cross paths over the years but there’s something to be said about being in the right place at the right time. Coincidence? Fate? Who knows but I’m convinced that had we met at any other time, it would have never worked out. Sara would have just been too damn annoying to me 😂

💜 There you were, and there I was, now here we are 💜
